University of Kerala was established on 1st November 1937 by a proclamation of the Maharaja of Travancore Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. It was the 16th University to be established in India and the first in the State of Kerala.The University at its very inception adopted as its motto “Karmani Vyajyate Prajna” a verse from the ancient Sanskrit work Panchathanthra.
In doing so, it placed before the academic community a lofty and inspiring ideal, worth striving for in its pursuit of academic excellence. Kerala University today is one of the largest Universities in the country with more than 70 affiliated colleges and numerous teaching/research departments.
The prestigious University of Kerala, the 16th to be founded at the national level and the first of its kind in Kerala came into being on 1st November 1937 by an official proclamation of Sri Chithira Thirunal Balaramavarma, the Maharaja of Travancore. The noble intention is amply expressed in the University motto itself – “Karmani Vyajyathe Prajna” which means ‘knowledge expands with every pursuit to attain’. The University enlivens each word of it when it gives priority to perfection and excellence. Kerala University is now one of the most reputed in the country comprising 40 teaching cum research departments and more than 70 affiliated colleges to its credit.
